What is included with the Brooksee-NYC Online Coaching Program?
You will receive a 24-week schedule that will include your daily workouts, weekly targets, and overall strategy for that training cycle. You will also receive detailed notes about how to complete certain workouts, and what your overall goal is for that particular workout.
Your coach will send weekly emails with instructions for the following week's workouts. These emails will remind you of the objectives of your specific training cycle, will explain the overall goals for each of your workouts, and will include tips on how to translate key concepts into preparation for the NYC Marathon course.
Additionally, the Brooksee coaching program includes:
- interactive online video conference calls with other Brooksee-NYC participants
- a group "Meet and Greet" with all the Brooksee-NYC participants on the evening of Friday, October 30, 2020, where your coach will provide a detailed segment-by-segment breakdown of the NYC Marathon course and go over race day logistics
- a group photo at the finish line followed by a 3-mile morning shakeout run along portions of the Central Park segment of the course on Saturday, October 31, 2020
What level should I choose?
Marathon
Level 1 NYC training is intended for first-time marathoners or runners who prefer lower mileage and intensity in a marathon training program. Can I switch between Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 training once the programs are underway?
Yes, but switching up is not recommended. The demands and intensity of the Level 3 training are high, and rely heavily on the ability to sustain demanding levels of mileage and intensity over the total training period. Switching down should not be a problem at any point in the program. It is a step down in intensity and overall mileage.
Do You Live or Work in NYC?
In conjunction with the Brooksee online training plan, you have the option of attending coach-led group workouts happening in NYC twice per week for an additional fee. These workouts will follow the online training plan with variations based on each of the three different training levels and will take place in Manhattan, and occasionally along segments of the marathon course within the other boroughs.
There's no better way to tackle two of the key workouts in your training week than with running partners to motivate you and a coach to guide you. In addition to the weekly workout, each session will begin with a structured warmup and on Tuesdays will conclude with strength focused exercises.
Training Sessions Offered:
- Sunday Long Runs at 8 am
These runs will begin at the Time Warner Center (West 59th Street and Columbus Circle) with a varying route based on that week's mileage goal. Many of the routes will follow along segments of the marathon course through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan.
-
Tuesday Speed/Hill Work at 6 am
These runs will begin at Engineers Gate in Central Park (East 90th Street and 5th Avenue) and will take advantage of the reservoir loop for track work, as well as the North Hills for hill work. The warm up and workout will last roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 with the optional strength training session lasting an additional 15 minutes.
What Dates Are the Weekly Workouts? What are the Costs?
Weekly workouts will be offered in 12-week or 24-week blocks. The 24-week block begins with the start of the Brooksee-NYC Program in May and continues right up until race day. The 12-week block begins in August and culminates with marathon race day.

Coaches
Coach Kristyn Smith is a 3:05 marathoner who has lived and worked in New York City for the past 15 years. Residing a mile from both Central Park and the Queens bridge, off 1st Avenue, along the marathon course itself means that large sections are her backyard and part of her daily running routine.
Since qualifying for the Boston Marathon on her second marathon outing, she has gone on to pursue the 6 Abbott World Marathon Majors. So far she has completed 4 of the 6, with Tokyo and London slated for spring 2020.
Kristyn is also a USATF certified official for meets throughout NYC and competes as part of the Dashing Whippets Run Club for the NYRR Team Championships.
Coach Paul Carmona has coached thousands of runners for more than 15 years for marathons around the world, from New York to Chicago, London to Paris, Tokyo to Estonia, and hundreds for The Boston Marathon.
As a 9-time Boston finisher, a 100-mile ultramarathoner, and Ironman triathlete, Coach Paul's philosophy is "get to the start line healthy and the finish line happy."
Coach Paul designed the Brooksee-NYC training programs. The New York City Marathon is one of the 69 marathons he has completed over a 19-year marathon racing career.
