Consistent Pace Amid Altitude Gains Mark Woodwell completed the 2025 Pikes Peak Ascent Half Marathon in 4:01:40, covering a distance of 13.36 miles. His average pace was 18:05 min/mile. Throughout the event, he maintained consistent placements, finishing 25th in his age division (45-49) and 291st in the Open gender category. Notably, his strongest pace was at the beginning, clocking an impressive 8:25 min/mile at the Ruxton split. While starting off strong with splits like 9:54 min/mile at Hydro Street, the later stages, such as the segment just 0.5 miles from the finish, saw his pace slow to 25:10 min/mile. This aligns with the expected effect of altitude and fatigue as he ascended to a height of over 14,000 feet. Despite these challenges, his progression from start to finish indicated a strong ability to manage his pace over varying altitudes. For future races, examining pacing strategies in high-altitude sections might help optimize performance.
