Steady Climb Amidst Pikes Peak Challenge James Lucero, 19, from Jemez Pueblo, NM, completed the 2025 Pikes Peak Ascent in 5:01:02, covering a distance of 13.36 miles with an elapsed pace of 22:31 min/mile. Despite the challenging terrain and altitude, James maintained a strategic pace. Notably, his performance saw improvement during segments between 7.8 Summit and Barr Camp, where he recorded a pace of 17:20 min/mile, even amidst rising elevation. Compared to his previous race at the 2024 Pikes Peak Ascent, James had a longer elapsed time this year by 11:55. His last mile saw a standing of 22nd place in the O16-19 division. His finish brought him to 1000th position overall out of 2049 participants. Reviewing the splits, James slowed towards the final stages, particularly in the last half-mile, where his pace reached 32:03 min/mile. Targeting this area could lead to further progress by potentially focusing on acclimatization protocols or pacing strategies in high-altitude conditions.
