I haven't always been this addicted to running. Heck, I haven't always been a runner. Period. Up until four years ago the only thing I could think about running after would be either an ice cream truck, Oscar Meyer Weiner-mobile or my parents trying to leave me at the gas station once again.
Having reached over 400 pounds I knew I needed a change in my life. Not only was I grossly overweight, but I wasn't happy. At all. On my graduation day from college, one of the happiest days of my life, I felt like scum. I felt depressed. I felt worthless.
But, something changed in me that day and bit by bit and step by step I've made the necessary changes in my life to not only lose the weight, but to be happier and more optimistic. I have lost over 180 pounds, and running is what I contribute that to most. It started with a 5K, then a 10K and once I gained the confidence I started training for a half marathon.
Once I got that first half marathon under my belt I seriously got hooked. I loved the challenge of running long distances. In 2012 I made a goal to run 12 half marathons, and I ended up running over 21. This included my first three marathons, one of which was the inaugural Big Cottonwood Marathon. To date I have run more than 52 races over the half marathon distance and plan on running 180 total before my 40th birthday (I have eight years to go).
Running has been a constant for me. It's not only a great way to keep the weight off, but I've gained a lot of confidence in challenging myself to run further and faster. I love the running community and the friends that I have made over the years. It's these friendships and relationships that keep me excited and going. It makes those 2 AM wakeup calls that much easier knowing that you are a part of a community that is so positive, supportive and caring.
I am looking forward to running the Big Cottonwood Marathon again in 2014 and the journey that will ensue leading up to it. It's a little less than a year away, but I can't wait to make new friends, run new races, and find new challenges in 2014. Running is the best and so much more enjoyable than people make it out to be sometimes. All you have to do is lace up and get out!
